The Minister for Health, Mr Jago, is deplorably obstinate in his attitude to
the investigation of Dr Alexander James’ treatment of asthma.
The aged Russian has proved beyond reasonable doubt that his method is not only
effective, but safe. Hundreds of people, not only on the South Coast, but from
many other areas, have written to this and other newspapers saying the ailment
has been cured by following the doctor’s advice.
But Mr Jago claims that Dr James has refused publication of his method except
under his own conditions, which are not acceptable to the Health Department.
From what Dr James says, the only stipulation he has made is that his treatment
should not be combined with the use of drugs. These he strenuously opposes,
because he feels they are not necessary and are ineffective.
It is a pity that the National Health and Medical Research Council has suspended
investigation on the establishment of a clinic based on Dr James’ method.
There is ample evidence that it is eminently successful, unorthodox though it
may be.
Unsolicited testimony has poured in from all over the nation praising the results
of the doctor’s treatment. A committee has been formed on the South Coast
to assist in having it accepted not only by the A.M.A., but by the Government
health authorities.
Yet Mr Jago is still unconvinced.
Whether Dr James is right or wrong is not the real issue – it is that
his treatment has, apparently, not been given reasonable analysis.
It seems that the Government steadfastly refuses to accept the system unless
the doctor allows drugs to be used in conjunction.
Mr Jago should reconsider his decision, and take another look at the situation.
As Minister for Health, he has a duty to the public – and in this instance
he does not appear to be fulfilling it.
